Xhosa Fundis Short Courses for Practical Language Acquisition
We offer the short courses listed below. Attendance is once a week, for a total of 6 weeks. Lessons are generally an hour and a half long, except for the first lesson of Course 1, which is 2 hours long. You will find both the 2012 schedule and an application form, lower down on this page.
COURSE 1 – Essential Social Xhosa
Entry requirements: Functional written and spoken English (Grade 8.) Course 1 equips learners with the essential Xhosa social skills. The language learnt can be used regularly and in any given context. The course content is carefully paced so that by week 6, learners are able to have a full conversation of everyday small talk, from greetings to farewells.
COURSE 2 – Essential Practical Xhosa
Entry requirements: Have completed Course 1 OR have equivalent knowledge. (Email us for a test.) This course equips learners with enough practical language skills to be able to conduct many of their regular daily interactions in Xhosa. Lessons focus on particular contexts eg. at the garage, shops, hospitality and getting to know someones likes and abilities, etc.
COURSE 3 – Essential Health and Workplace Xhosa
Entry requirements: Have completed Course 1 & 2 OR have equivalent knowledge. (Email us for a test.) This course focuses on areas such as finding things, directions, general health, feelings and language for discussions or meetings.
Xhosa Fundis’ Approach: The above short courses focus on enabling learners to speak and understand the most commonly useful areas of language, as comprehensively as possible, and in the shortest possible time. We teach all the related grammar and pronunciation needed for learners to make sense of what they are saying. This provides a firm foundation for learners who wish to extend their knowledge further. The focus is on enjoyment, which will allow continued learning to occur.
Xhosa Fundis Short Grammar Courses
Our Grammar courses run throughout the year. The content is always changing and looking at different areas of Xhosa grammar. It is a wonderful resource for people who either need, or just enjoy, a deeper knowledge of how the Xhosa language is structured. As with all our short courses, attendance is an hour and a half, weekly, for 6 weeks.
